She tried to instill in little one that she was indeed kind, smart, and important even though the child's mother refused to see those qualities in her own child due to being so busy keeping up about appearances that we're less than accurate or truthful. I love strong southern women! I've read the book three times (so far) and have seen the movie at least a dozen times. It carries a powerful message. Loved it!!!
